What is protein and what does our body need it for?

¿Qué es proteína y para que nuestro cuerpo la neceista?

Protein is an essential nutrient for the human body and fulfils a wide variety of vital functions. We need protein for:

  • Tissue construction and repair: Proteins are the building blocks of tissues in our bodies, including muscles, skin, hair, nails, organs and more. They help maintain and repair these tissues so they function properly.
  • Enzyme and hormone synthesis: Enzymes are proteins that facilitate and speed up chemical reactions in our bodies, which is essential for digestion, metabolism and other biological functions. Hormones are also proteins that regulate various bodily functions, such as growth, reproduction and blood sugar balance.
  • Immune system: Proteins play an important role in the immune system, acting as antibodies to help the body defend itself against infection and disease.
  • Transport and storage of nutrients: Some proteins are responsible for transporting nutrients and oxygen through the bloodstream and cells, ensuring they get to where they are needed.
  • Fluid balance and pH: Proteins help maintain fluid balance in the body and play a role in regulating the pH (acidity) of body fluids.
  • Energy: While carbohydrates and fats are the body's main sources of energy, in situations of carbohydrate shortage, proteins can become an alternative source of energy through a process called gluconeogenesis

It is essential to consume sufficient protein through the diet, as the body cannot produce it on its own in adequate amounts. Protein is made up of amino acids, and there are nine essential amino acids that cannot be synthesised by the body and must be obtained from food.

Food sources rich in protein include lean meats, fish, eggs, dairy products, legumes, nuts, seeds and plant-based foods such as soybeans and soy products.

The daily amount of protein a person needs varies according to age, weight, level of physical activity and other individual factors. It is advisable to talk to a nutritionist or health professional to determine the right amount of protein for your specific needs and goals.

Protein supplements are products designed to increase dietary protein intake. They are available in various forms, such as whey protein powder, casein protein, soy protein, pea protein, rice protein, among others. These supplements are popular with athletes, regular exercisers and those looking to improve their body composition and overall health. Some of the benefits associated with protein supplements are:

  • Muscle development and repair: Protein is essential for the synthesis and repair of tissues, including muscle. Protein supplements are especially useful for those looking to increase muscle mass or who participate in intense physical activity, as they can help speed muscle recovery after exercise.
  • Satiety and appetite control: Protein is more satiating than carbohydrates or fats, which means it can help reduce hunger and appetite. This can be beneficial for those trying to control their calorie intake and lose weight.
  • Ease of consumption: Protein supplements are convenient and easy to consume. They can be easily mixed with water or milk and taken quickly after exercise or at any time of the day when a protein boost is needed.
  • Maintaining muscle mass during weight loss: When following a weight loss diet, it is common to lose both fat and muscle mass. Protein supplements can help preserve lean muscle mass during the weight loss process.
  • Support bone health: Protein is a key component of bone and can contribute to overall bone health.
  • Nutritional support for restrictive diets: For people who follow vegetarian, vegan or vegan diets or who have specific dietary restrictions, protein supplements can be a way to make sure they get enough protein and essential amino acids.

It is important to note that protein supplements should not replace a balanced and nutritious diet based on whole foods. It is always preferable to get most of your protein from natural and varied food sources. Before you start taking protein supplements, it is advisable to speak to a health professional or nutritionist to ensure that they are suitable for your individual needs and goals.
